WALTHAMSTOW: Squatters in tenant’s roof

SQUATTERS can be heard moving around in the roof of a Walthamstow block of flats, a tenant has claimed.
Aydan Ulugun, 30, a decorator of Stocksfield Road, claims she can hear footsteps in the cavity above her flat, which is maintained by Ascham Homes, and believes someone may have gained access to the loft.
She said: “I hear them late at night, between about one and five in the morning. It’s causing me a lot of stress.”

Nearly a million Jamaicans on stolen land

THE NUMBER of Jamaicans living in squatter settlements across the island could soon rush past the one million mark, with one-third of the population, or about 900,000 persons, occupying lands illegally.
Concerns were raised during yesterday’s sitting of the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament about an insufficient sum set aside in the 2009-10 Estimates of Expenditure to deal with squatter management.

P1b to house .5m squatters

THE Metro Manila Development Authority is pushing its mass housing plan for 544,000 slum dwellers who will be displaced by its clearing operations, following the approval of a P1-billion allocation in Congress.
Chairman Bayani Fernando, in an interview, said the budget should ease the problem of informal settlers compounded by their presence in danger.

“Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing [of the Fifth District] had informed me about the budget exclusively devoted for slum dwellers here in Metro Manila, particularly those along the waterways,” he told Standard Today.

Fernando said Bagatsing, author of the low-cost housing allocation for informal settlers in the metropolis, noted that evicted families usually ended up transferring to another high-risk area.

“I think P1 billion is sufficient to build homes to address a housing backlog for 544,000 informal setters in open spaces, waterways and other danger zones,” he said, adding that a P50,000-shelter was achievable on pre-fabricated and modular technology for the benefit of every squatter family.

Fernando heads an interagency council composed of the National Housing Authority and the 17 localities in Metro Manila, created by Malacañang last year to deal with the squatting problem, among other tasks.

With Advocates’ Help, Squatters Call Foreclosures Home

MIAMI — When the woman who calls herself Queen Omega moved into a three-bedroom house here last December, she introduced herself to the neighbors, signed contracts for electricity and water and ordered an Internet connection.
What she did not tell anyone was that she had no legal right to be in the home.
Ms. Omega, 48, is one of the beneficiaries of the foreclosure crisis. Through a small advocacy group of local volunteers called Take Back the Land, she moved from a friend’s couch into a newly empty house that sold just a few years ago for more than $400,000.
