The ’squatter‘ living in a €1m house with his wife… and the other woman

The Irish Mail on Sunday can today reveal the extraordinary lifestyle of the ’squatter‘ who recently won a landmark case allowing him to keep a house he broke into almost three decades ago.

The Supreme Court ruled two weeks ago that Des Grogan should keep the Edwardian house in Dublin which he had illegally entered in 1982 after discovering that the occupant had died without any next of kin.

Squatter told he can stay in NAMA ghost estate home

He was on the housing list for five years and, out of desperation to find somewhere to call home, eventually resorted to squatting in one of the thousands of empty houses in ghost estates littering Ireland.

William Tuohy said last night that the house in Church Hill, Tullamore, Co Offaly, wasn‘t his first choice — but he is delighted with his new home.

And yesterday a judge allowed him to continue living there when she threw out a case to force Mr Tuohy from his home.

The hidden history of squatting in Ireland

TWENTY YEARS ago Dublin Corporation was forced to give tenancies of hundreds of squatters. Those people got themselves housed, not by pleading with politicians, but through direct action. Alan MacSimoin, who was one of the organisers of Dublin Squatters Association, remembers how they did it.
In 1976 there were several hundred families squatting in local authority flats in the Corporation area. Waiting lists were long and increasing numbers were housing themselves in flats which had become vacant or were due for rehabilitation work.
