The art of setting up home for diddly-squat

With more than 120,000 unoccupied homes in the city and a housing crisis, it’s no wonder squatting is thriving, writes Erik Jensen.
The best place was probably in Northbridge, living in the pylon of a suspension bridge overhanging Tunks Park. It lasted half-a-year before Ashwyn Falkingham
and his fellow squatters were thrown out.
‚‘That was a really beautiful place to live. I stayed six months under the bridge and cooked on a fire each night,'‘ says the 26-year-old student of renewable energy engineering.

Kenya: Judge Orders 200 Squatters Evicted

The fate of about 200 families squatting on a disputed property in Mshomoroni was sealed yesterday after the court ordered they be evicted. There was tension in court after representatives of the squatters heard Justice Jackton Ojwang’s ruling.

This ends the long and protracted battle between the squatters and a developer trading under the name of Trade Plus International Limited. There have been running battles, riots and demonstrations leading to injuries of both protesters and the police. Justice Ojwang‘ ruled that the squatters had settled on the plot illegally.

Squatter hate Mail’s real agenda

The Daily Mail and Tory MPs are obsessed with squatting.

Every two months the Mail bangs home the message that squatting is „legal“ in Britain.

What it actually means is that squatting is not criminal.

Trespassing on someone’s property has always been a tort or civil wrong.

‘Squatter Rent’ May Boost Spending as Mortgage Holders Bail

Melissa White and her husband stopped paying their mortgage in May 2008 after it reset to $3,200 a month, more than double the original rate. That gave them extra cash to pay off debts and spend on staples until their Las Vegas home sold two years later for less than they owed.

“We didn’t pay it for about 24 months,” said White, who quit her job as a beautician during that period after becoming pregnant with her first child and experiencing medical complications. “What we had, we could put towards food and the truck payments and insurance and health things I was dealing with.”

Calling All Squatters!

We‘re putting together an exhibition and zine with positive squatting stories to contradict and show the other side to squatting, to the one regurgitated again and again by the mainstream media.
