Squatters hold up corpn’s plan to unclog minor waterways

CHENNAI: Every monsoon season, Mambalam canal, one of the city’s major flood water carriers, overflows into the neighbouring areas of T Nagar and Kodambakkam. And flood woes are likely to continue as the Chennai Corporation’s upgradation of minor waterways, including Mambalam canal, has hit a roadblock.

The corporation identified 3,743 families squatting on the banks of channels such as Vysarpadi canal, Nandanam canal, Raj Bhavan canal and Mambalam canal but none of the encroachers have been removed as the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) does not have tenements to relocate these families.
